Is parakeet food safe for cockatiels?
Question by spirithawk06: Is parakeet food safe for cockatiels?
I just realized that the mixture I bought to add to Soren’s (my 6 month old Whiteface pearl cockatiel) feed is for parakeets. It has all the same things that the cockatiel mix had minus the sunflower seeds. I was trying to find a mix that didn’t have a lot of sunflower seeds. He already has sunflower seeds in his regular seed mixture and I try to pick out as much as I can because I have been told by several people, an avian expert included that they are high in fat. Does it really make that much of a difference if he gets fed parakeet food? The mix I bought was Ecotrition Grains and Greens Variety Blend. It has a lot of dehydrated vegetables in it along with seeds and is fortified with vitamins that is the only way I can get him to eat vegetables as of yet. The only difference between this one and the one that was for cockatiels was the sunflower seeds from what I can see but I don’t have a container to look at. Does it make that much difference?

“Browns” Parakeet food is the BEST.
$ 14 will give you a good 1-3 month’s supply, accompany that with a little millet every night, and some other treats as well.
My bird would not eat Kaytee, or any other “brand-name” bird food for 2 days, I was so scared; I found this food in my supermarket one night, and guess what? He ate every last piece of it.
no additives,no chemicals, nothing, just pure natural bird food the way God intended.
Good luck and let me know how this works out for you.

I bought him a bag of hagen's original, the kind that looks bland... do you have any food that your budgie rly likes? the price is not an issue as long it's not anything much too expensive. he isn't fond of plain and bland things but he isn't fond of very loud and colorful food either.
thank u all!!

Is this a new bird? How old is it? Are you certain the bird is fully weaned. Sometimes a young bird will revert back to wanting to be hand fed and if this is the case you need to get it to someone who knows how to do this.
If you have had the bird for a while and it has decided not to eat then it needs to be seen by your vet.
Birds are suspicious of new things and it may take a while for it to accept a new food, for this reason you should never run out of the food it was eating and introduce the new food slowly, put it in a treat dish along side the old food. I would also keep spray millet in the cage, all birds love this and it is very nutritious.

Budgie doesn’t like pellet food and is depressed?
Question by budgie_boo19: Budgie doesn’t like pellet food and is depressed?
I changed her food gradually to pellets and I have them grinded up so she can eat them good. She eats them, but for the past few days she’s been sitting in her cage with feathers ruffled and looking sad. Should I just give in and give her seed that she likes? I don’t like it when she is sad.

Answer by Wondering
She needs to go to the vet. If she was eating them fine and has stopped, along with a puffed appearance, she is sick. See if she’ll eat seed; if she eats voraciously she’s probably starving. Earlier she may have been playing with or even grinding the pellets without ingesting them. So yes–try to feed her seed and see what happens. If she runs to her food dish and chows down and looks better after an hour or so you’re probably out of the woods. Better to eat a seed diet than nothing at all! Then try again to convert her to pellets but go even more slowly and carefully.
edit: If she doesn’t run and eat and look better right away, get her to the vet ASAP!
