My budgies are eating their own feces! I provide fresh food and water, anybody know why they’re doing this?

We’ve had the budgies for a week, they haven’t displayed any odd behavior up until now.

They are fine, simply curious and pick on their own poop. As long as they are active and not sitting or sleeping for a long time they are alright

this occurs in all animals,my 2 budgies do it too, theyre merely recycling their food for extra vitamins, theyll poop on the hoods of their food and watter bins and eat it right off.

It’s called coprophagia. The reasons why birds eat their own feces is controversial, but can be caused by nutritional deficiencies (calcium a big one), environmental factors (stress), psychological problems (boredom) or a pathology. Any bird eating droppings should have a complete medical evaluation. There are meds available that an avian vet can prescribe if he/she deems it appropriate based on a medical evaluation. Often times, the problem can be resolved with a diet change to a more healthier, nutritional diet.

You need to provide your budgies with a cuttlebone, a mineral block, and a few toys that have bells… this should help eliminate the feces eating behavior. Also, be sure to change the paper lining in their cage every day… if the fecal material or other droppings such as fruits or veggies begin growing mold/fungus/bacteria… your birds can become very ill from this.

Good luck to you and your new little budgies!
