They want nothing to do w/ me. I Started w/ just 2 males and they faught so much I thought they might injure eachother so I got 2 females to help them be less interested in eachother. It worked but now I think since I started a little flock they seem to not have any interest in human interaction. I put my finger on a perch and just leave it there for a couple of minutes a couple times a day to try and get them used to my hand, and they don’t flop around the cage when I do it any more so I am assuming thats a good thing. But I have had them for 2 months now and they don’t seem even close to being tame. I would love to be able to let them fly about the house, but I don’t want to have t spend 2 hours trying to catch them to get them back in. ( their cage is huge and plenty big enough for them to fly inside) Any advice on how to tame my beautiful little budgies would be very much apreciated.
- medleyc1

Is it safe to apply antibiotic (neosporin) to the wound?

I have two budgies the hen recently laid eggs, four eggs, 3 of them hatched, the fourth might hatch today or later. In the meanwhile, the cock (male) and the hen (female) fought for some reason I dont know why?. The hen got hurt due to that. Can I apply antibiotic ointment to it? Is it safe to apply antibiotic, Is neosporin safe to apply? Other than that the bird (hen) looks fine? I am not a breeder I have only two birds and they ended up laying eggs. I just want to take care of them as much as possible.

Please advice.

Thanks a lot.
- SRKPRIV

Hello,
I got a 3 year years old male budgie who got injured in the head by my very naughty 2 years old male cat……i always keep the cat away for my budgies but the cat managed to reach the bird`s cage while they were sleeping and injured him in the head…the only indication of injury i could see is two clotted drops of blood few millimeters apart in his head and i couldnt clean the wound since the blood was already clotted but the bird is eating and moving in his cage normally……i really dont know what to do since i am in the middle east and there are no budgies specialised vets at all and all they do is treat cats and dogs unfortunately.I am afraid of loosing my budgie and need some advice(again…..i cant find any vet who knows about budgies)……PLZ help.

thanks.
UPDATE/EDIT 2/13/2008:
i tried using another mild diluted antiseptic solution but the bird kept moving his head away from it although i was holding him tightly……i think the local/topical treatment would have been useless since it will not get absorbed as the tiny wound is covered by a thick blood clot.

anyway, more than 19 hours passed already since the injury happened and i`ve been watching my budgie closely……hopefully he`s fine(so far) moving, eating and playing in his cage normally.

I really appreciate your help and concern and it really helps to share experiences/problems…etc regarding pet care especially when you are in a middle eastern country where pet care(especially birds) doesnt even exist:(

regards,
Mr A.
- Mr A

We’ve had Freddie now for over 5 years, he lives in a large cage with our 3 female budgies. Early this morning we were awoken to the sound of him what I can only descibe as screaming, I uncovered the cage and he was flying from side to side, then falling to the floor screaming his head off. I took him out of the cage so he didn’t injure himself, I spoke to him and eventually he calmed down. This happened again over the next 3 hours or so 10 times at least. This has occurred before but never as severe as this. He sat with me for almost 4 hours and when I felt he was calm enough I transferred into a cage on his own. He seems pretty stunned now, but is slowly getting back to normal, has even managed a few chirps.
We desperately want to help the little chap when he’s going through this but are not sure what happened or how to deal with it.

Any suggestions gratefully received.
- SANDRA W
