Oh goodness it sounds like you haven’t done your homework at all on these guys! Go out right now and buy a book all about parakeets. If you aren’t well informed, you can end up with mean, untame birds and also kill them because you wont know what to look for in a sick bird! Please, do all the research you can before getting these guys!

As for the food, since I’m guessing you will have a pair of them, fill the seed cup that comes with the cage. After 24 hours, note how much they ate out of it and feed them a little more than that each day. Birds don’t overeat usually so there should be food available to them 24/7. Also, don’t feed them just seeds. This will cause fatty liver disease and kill them. If they’re already on a seed diet, convert them to a pellet food by mixing 3/4 seeds to 1/4 pellets for a week, then half and half for a week, then 3/4 pellets to 1/4 seeds, then all pellets and use the seeds as a treat or reward in training.

Budgies need a constant supply of food.Fill the seed cups up,the birds will eat as and when they need to. Budgies eat little but often. During the course of the day,you will need to blow any husks away from the seed cup or your birds will not get enough to eat. This should be done two/three times daily. Replenish the cups as necessary. If you have more than one bird, remember to supply the appropriate amount of food cups.Your birds will need a constant supply of fresh water also, which must be changed often, this is critical to your birds health.Your birds will also need other foods to supplement their diet…

Birds eat several times their own weight each day. They need to eat frequently.

Birds will eat what they need. You do not have to ration it’s food.

Keep the food available for it at all times.

When checking it’s food dish, here is something else to keep in mind: Birds eat by cracking open the shells, eating the meat inside the shells, and the husk drops where it may. Most often, the husks will drop into it’s food dish. So, you can not check the bird’s food by looking at the food dish. You need to inspect it, because what’s in the food dish may only be the husk of the seed, and no food for the bird, even though the dish looks full.
