What do I do about a smelly bird cage?

Question by ^_^: What do I do about a smelly bird cage?
I have four parakeets in a huge cage that I clean everyday. For some reason, the cage smells as if I haven’t cleaned it in months. What can I do about the farm smell?

Even though you clean it every day, with that many birds you should totally clean it at least every two weeks. I’m talking about putting the birds somewhere else, taking the cage apart and using soap, clean it, scrub it. When you are done, spray with a solution of bleach and let it set for at least 10 minutes. Then rinse and dry it. Soak the perches and feed cups in a solution of 6 oz bleach to one gallon of water. Let them soak for10 min, wash with soap, rinse and let air dry. Or you can put the perches (wooden) in the oven on 200 degrees for about 15 or 20 min. Bacteria builds up on the welds of the cages, in the corners and on hinges. All bird cages should be cleaned like this at least once a month, more if you have a lot of birds in the cage as you do. Bacteria can cause odor, and cause illness in both birds and humans. Please read my profile.

You can take them out and put them in another cage and wash down the cage well with some mild detergent and water.

I have three parakeets in a cage and when it starts to smell I wash the whole cage with bleach and put it in the sun till it drys completely and i use newspaper on the bottom of the cage. I stop using the stuff they sell now for the bottom of the cages cuz it made my cages smell all the time..Oh ya try misting them so they can take baths that helps too.
